British painter Peter Brown, known as Pete the Street, has received a major endorsement from Banksy after the anonymous artist shared Pete’s oil painting of the newly unveiled Waterloo Place sculpture on his official Instagram account today.
The Banksy post, captioned simply “The scene in Pall Mall as recorded by Pete the Street,” places the plein-air artist at the centre of one of the most discussed public artworks currently unfolding in London. The oil painting by Pete the Street captures not only the statue itself, a marching figure engulfed by a flag, but also the crowds, mobile phones, barriers, and collective atmosphere surrounding the monument.

Pete the Street painting ‘5th May Banksy Statue‘ also captures the social choreography around it. The resulting painting transforms the moment into a study of spectatorship, public space, and contemporary political theatre.
