Meeka Fine Jewelry grows craft and community in Camp Hill and Rhode Island

Monika Krol has built a career around making a statement — one rooted in passion, craftmanship and calculated risk. Twelve years ago, the entrepreneur opened Meeka Fine Jewelry in downtown Camp Hill, bringing a big-city design sensibility to a small-town setting. 

This year marks Krol’s 12th year in the business as a designer-maker, featuring an exclusive collection of her own handcrafted fine jewelry line alongside a curated selection of designer-makers from around the United States. 

How it began 

After spending eight years in Philadelphia honing her skills under the mentorship of her University of the Arts professor, she felt ready to branch out on her own. That confidence led to a series of business steps, from purchasing metals and gemstones, to forming an LLC, signing a lease agreement and opening a snug storefront in November 2014 at 2205 Market Street in Camp Hill. 

Opening just before the gift-giving season turned out to be a wise decision.  

“We had a wildly successful start with steady, organic growth on social media and robust online sales from across the country,” said Krol.  

Demand prompted a move to a much larger space, so three years later Krol moved up the street to 2135 Market Street.  

“Artists, friends and family helped us build showcases and remodel the interior,” said Krol.  

The result was a streamlined, contemporary shop that reflects the curated aesthetic of a big-city boutique. 

“As we grew, word spread and soon incredibly talented artists began pursuing us in order to be part of the collection,” Krol said, noting that customers responded favorably to her fresh approach. “People saw it as a change from the traditional commercial jewelry store options. They view pieces not just as accessories, but as small works of art and investments.” 

Challenges 

Like most retail businesses, Meeka has faced its own set of challenges, from keeping pace with ever-evolving social media platforms, to more recently navigating the rising cost of gold and silver.  

“Finding time to be in the studio to work on my art has also been a continuous struggle because so much needs to be done on the business side of things,” Krol said. 

Her advice to aspiring entrepreneurs centers on persistence and adaptability.  

“Consistency is important, as is the willingness to try and fail. Sometimes you succeed, oftentimes you do not, but having the will to get back up and try again is always necessary,” she said. 

Krol also believes that it’s also necessary to push beyond one’s comfort zone.  

“I am an introvert and Meeka has helped me build a community and reach beyond my little jeweler’s studio.  It’s also important to be flexible. You’ll wear a lot of hats when starting out and if you’re not passionate about it and willing to work hard, it’s not going to last,” she said. 

Growth and momentum 

Meeka has grown to include an additional store in Newport Rhode Island and her online business continues to thrive. 

Experiential retail has become part of the strategy.  

“We recently hosted a Galentine’s event for women to enjoy chocolates, wine, a flower bar and to create their own wish lists for a loved one, or themselves,” Krol said, adding that its meaningful to be in a business that helps commemorate milestones and relationships. “What we see in the shop is often multi-generational,” she said.  

Krol is now in the process of capturing Meeka stories on video.  

“We’ll be sharing why women choose special pieces and what it means to them. These ‘Meeka Stories’ are building memories to last a lifetime,” she said. 

Looking ahead, Krol hopes the next decade will bring continued growth.  

“We’re always trying to improve. We’ve built a team that’s passionate and collaborative and we’re constantly working on better ways to tell our story and enhance the customer experience.” 

For Krol, the payoff is both professional and personal. “I’m grateful to be able to offer something of value to the community and am thankful my aesthetic and work ethic led the way,” she said.
