Seeds petals stones | Meer

PDX Contemporary Art is pleased to
present seeds petals stones, an exhibition of
new work by Ellen George.

Drawn to making forms that evoke the simple
elemental shapes found in nature, Ellen George
creates works which are intimately scaled and
delicate in form and palette. The shapes are
familiar, but resist categorization—things we
collect, hold in reverence, and know well that
have quiet, hidden power, like seeds, petals,
and stones.

In the gallery are recent works from several
approaches. A series of wall sculptures made of
whittled wood rods and hand-formed polymer,
sit nimbly on the wall. Soft paintings on
contoured, ultra-thin birch panel lilt sculpturally
and cast halos of color onto the wall, expanding
their domain. Another ongoing suite of work
uses button thread to create a drawing, which is
then veiled under a layer of thin, painted fabric,
creating a relief that subtlety shifts with the light.
Each way of working reflects her interest in
unseen mysteries, highlighting moments that hover between what came before and what may come
next.
