Barrow’s Top Trumps game launches celebrating local landmarks

Created by volunteer arts group ArtWorks Art4All, the project features 54 cards, each highlighting a different local landmark.

The cards were researched and designed by a wide range of contributors including schools, community groups, charities, businesses and individuals.

The packs are fully playable and include original photos and fun facts – ranging from the fascinating to the downright bizarre.

Former art teacher Sharon Wendy Tait, of ArtWorks Art4All, said: “The groups were asked to find out anything that they thought was interesting or unusual about particular Barrow buildings and landmarks  – and it’s really amusing.

The DDH (Devonshire Dock Hall) card is very interesting – Furness Railway Club found out that you could fit 5.44 billion average sized bananas in there – only Furness Railway Club could come up with that.

“Carer Support Furness found out that you can fit 26.5 double-decker buses on the ground floor of Barrow Library.

“The Crown Inn in Walney apparently has a ghost and Rita E Stretch murdered Ian Grieg by pen knife whilst staying at the Duke of Hotel in 1966.”

The project launched in September last year and since then has brought together a wide cross-section of the community from schoolchildren and businesses to local individuals and Navy submariners.

Sharon added: “When we initially told people we were making a Barrow version of Top Trumps, people could be a bit like ‘well, how are you going to do that with Barrow?’ And we said ‘well we’ll take a look at the buildings’ and they were ‘well that’s going to be a bit rubbish’.

“Then we actually started to go through the buildings and people were like ‘oh we’re going to need another set actually’.

“It’s been really interesting and lovely to see people moving into feeling more positive about Barrow.

“It was important to us to include all generations. When we went around the schools we asked ‘what are the important buildings’ to you and they all said ‘McDonald’s’ – so now McDonald’s is in there.

“We initially thought we’d only have around 25 groups involved but it ended up being 48 with 54 cards in the pack.

“It’s been an amazing community project and we’ve managed to locate so many buildings you just wouldn’t think are that special – I actually know a lot more about Barrow now than where I am originally from which is Manchester.”
