Nestled on the England-Wales border between Kington and Presteigne, The Rodd is a visitor attraction centred around the historic Rodd Court, a Jacobean manor house, and has served as a hub for artists and creativity for over a century.
The site, which includes a tithe barn art gallery, offers a unique blend of art and nature, featuring a community-run kitchen garden, a traditional orchard, and picturesque views across Hindwell Valley.
The Sidney Nolan Trust, founded in 1985 by renowned Australian artist Sir Sidney Nolan and his wife, Lady Mary Nolan, operates The Rodd.
The trust manages a significant collection of Nolan’s artworks, photography, and personal archive.
It also stewards their former home, set within 180 acres of farmland and woodland.
The trust is dedicated to enhancing its environmental practices, evidenced by the transformation of two hectares of former grazing land into a wildflower meadow, in collaboration with Herefordshire Meadows.
The spring programme at The Rodd features two new exhibitions: Another Step Towards Troy, running until June 28, and Tending to Nowhere, open until July 5.
Another Step Towards Troy explores a pivotal moment in Sir Sidney Nolan’s career, focusing on his engagement with the myths of Ancient Greece during his stay on the Aegean island of Hydra in 1955.
The exhibition showcases works by contemporary painter Daniel MacCarthy and Sir Sidney Nolan, along with archival materials from this formative period.
Tending to Nowhere, presented in association with The Copy Collective, features recently rediscovered photocopy artworks by Sir Sidney Nolan.
These works, created in his studio between 1986 and 1987, reveal a lesser-known aspect of Nolan’s practice.
The exhibition includes contemporary artists’ responses to these findings, exploring themes of absence, repetition, and the fragility of images.
Visitors can also explore Rodd Court’s evolving displays, the artist’s only surviving studio, historic farm buildings, and tranquil grounds.
The Rodd is open Wednesday to Sunday, 11am to 4pm, and operates until October 4.
