Chris Packham to judge new Hastings Contemporary exhibition

They include comedian Zoe Lyons, wildlife broadcaster Chris Packham, and Courtauld Gallery curator Elena Crippa, who will help select work for The Open: Odyssey.

The biennial event launches in 2026 at Hastings Contemporary and will showcase art from across Sussex.

Hastings Contemporary Director Kathleen Soriano said: “As a gallery on the beach, we are witnesses to the changes going on around us and are committed to delivering an artistic programme that is anchored in ocean futures and sustainability.

“Artists have always been able to communicate in ways that allow us to ‘see’ things differently and I am confident that our Open exhibitors will honour local stories and connect to global conversations.”

The exhibition will fill the gallery, with works by more than 100 Sussex artists.

All selected pieces will be available for sale.

Jo Myles, director of Sussex Contemporary, said the judges’ expertise would help ensure Odyssey becomes “a platform where innovative ideas and emerging talent can truly thrive.”

Mr Packham, also a conservationist, said, “Sussex’s coastlines and wild spaces are under immense pressure, yet they remain places of astonishing beauty and inspiration.”

Ms Lyons said she was “so excited to be part of the jury” and was looking forward to seeing the results of this creative odyssey.

The exhibition opens on March 28, 2026.
