Barcelona’s iconic Passeig de Gràcia metro station just got a major glow up and one Maltese artist was right at the centre of it.
Antonella Vella, who goes by the artist name Artinella, was the only Maltese artist selected to showcase her work in a stunning public art project organised by Expometro.
The exhibition transformed one of the city’s longest and most dreaded corridors into a colourful and vibrant gallery that thousands of commuters walk through every day.
Known as the corridor of death for its seemingly endless stretch and drab walls, the 237 metre tunnel connecting lines L3 and L4 has been reborn as a mega art space featuring works by 1,080 artists from 88 different nationalities.
From paintings to photographs to digital and mixed media, the show brings together 1,401 artworks in 36 collective installations — a free and immersive exhibition now part of the daily routine of around 400,000 people for two weeks straight.
Speaking to Lovin Malta, Artinella said the experience was nothing short of surreal.
“Seeing my artworks in such a public and international space in the heart of Barcelona was incredible. I felt honoured to represent Malta among so many other countries and artists,” she said.
The exhibition runs until 29th June at the Passeig de Gràcia metro station corridor. And if you are lucky enough to be in Barcelona before then, this might just be the most unexpected art experience you’ll stumble upon underground.
