Curator Cecilia Alemani’s Vision for SITE’s 12th International | Pasatiempo

Cecilia Alemani is relieved as she sits down to speak with Pasatiempo. It’s mid-June, and SITE Santa Fe is in full gallery-construction mode with wires and dust and some artworks already up, like Nabokov’s drawings of butterfly wings.

It’s two weeks before the opening of the 12th International, and emotions are running high. Yet, Alemani is elated. She says she can now finally breathe, because she and her team just sent to print the International’s guide, in English and in Spanish, and that it’s quite something.

It’s something, because the 12th International counts almost 100 artists and figures, both living and deceased, real and imaginary, and more than 300 artworks across 15 locations in Santa Fe and its environs. That’s a lot, although to be honest, 300 artworks might not feel like that much to Alemani, who curated the 59th Venice Biennale that opened in 2022 and which she titled Milk of Dreams.

The 12th International opens Friday, June 27, and Pasatiempo breaks it down for you.

You included historical figures and even fictional characters in the 12th International, just as you did in the Venice Biennale in 2022. Why?

Is that where the idea of pairings artists comes from?

Curator Cecilia Alemani's Vision for the 12th International

SITE Santa Fe 12th International curator Cecilia Alemani didn’t shy away from controversy while curating the International’s art installations, hoping they would help create space for conversation.

What about La Malinche?

The 12th International is set across 15 locations. Why so many?

Who is your audience?

The abandoned Finquita foundry will host an installation that addresses the history of the Santa Fe Internment Camp. How did that come to be?

What did you learn about Santa Fe and New Mexico while working on the 12th International?
