New sculpture showcased in Sweetheart Corner

North Syracuse celebrated their 100th anniversary on Saturday. The village celebrated with a parade, a surprise sculpture and a festival at the end. Even with the rainy weather, residents still showed up to enjoy the day’s festivities.

“We come every year and some rain’s not gonna stop us,” said Emmalee Polhamus.

The parade started at 10 a.m., featuring the police department, fire department and live music from the CNS Vocal Jazz Choir.

The parade started at Lonergan Park and ended at the North Syracuse Veterans Memorial.

Gary Butterfield, mayor of North Syracuse, expressed gratitude for the community.

“I’m very thankful for the hundred years,” said Mayor Butterfield. “Created in 1925, this is the hundred-year anniversary.”

The all-day event also showcased a surprise sculpture from artist Fick Neely. Neely created a conversation bench in the Sweetheart Corner. The sculpture is of a red heart, where people can sit and talk to one another.

“It feels like a place of connection and it feels like right now, a lot of people need connection in their life,” said Neely.
