Ryde School student’s first-ever oil painting set for London showcase

A Ryde School student’s first-ever oil painting is set to be showcased at a prestigious event in London.

Inspired by her travels to Malaysia, the painting by Janice was one of the school’s submissions for this year’s Royal Academy Young Artists’ Summer Show.

Created from a photo she took while in a car during a heavy downpour, the painting was chosen by the judges from over 23,000 UK entries.

Janice, a Year 13 student, said: “We were visiting family and I was in the back of the car while it was raining really heavily.

“I felt very calm at that moment and took a photo, then later decided it would be good to paint for my final coursework.

“It’s something I think makes people feel different emotions, and I’m really happy it has been chosen for the Royal Academy Young Artists’ Summer Show.”

Ahead of the London show in July, the painting will also be displayed at Ryde School’s summer exhibition on June 5.

Ryde School art teacher Natalie Broughton said: “We’re really proud of Janice, as she works incredibly hard and is very dedicated to her art.

“Especially given this was her first oil painting, it’s an amazing achievement.”
