Fulham Pier has today announced a major new public art installation by independent artist Sophie Tea, marking the artist’s first ever solo public commission. Known for building a loyal community of more than two million followers through social media, Tea has successfully translated digital reach into real‑world cultural impact, with this installation representing her move firmly into the public realm.
The large‑scale public artwork called ‘Under the Pier’ will be on display at Fulham Pier from 1 June 2026 until October, free and open to the public daily, and launches Fulham Pier’s wider culture‑led summer programme, including opportunities to see Sophie Tea live paint.
The collaboration reimagines the British seaside on the River Thames, bringing escape and play to Fulham Pier’s riverside setting framed by surrounding parkland and expansive river views. Offering a calmer pace shaped by passing rowers and golden sunsets, Fulham Pier feels a world away while remaining just moments from central London. From soaring seagulls and sailing boats on the Thames to stripey deckchairs perfect for embodying British summer, the riverside destination captures the essence of a laid‑back escape.
Spanning Fulham Pier’s 18 architectural beams on the riverwalk and adjacent walls, the large‑scale public artwork marks a milestone moment in Sophie Tea’s career, bringing her socially driven practice into an open‑air public setting for the first time. Bold painted works and large sculptural 3D seaside elements will immerse visitors into a colourful reimagining of the British seaside through Sophie Tea’s eyes, aligning with Fulham Pier’s ethos to slow down and embrace living in the now.
The commission, brought to life in collaboration with New Public, reflects a shared ambition to make contemporary art feel accessible, surprising and part of everyday experiences rather than something confined to traditional gallery settings.
Sophie Tea shared: “Creating a public installation has been on my goal list on the fridge for over a decade because democratising access to art is something I believe in at my core. As a completely independent artist without traditional gallery backing, I’ve always known that reaching that goal would take a different path so bringing this work to life at Fulham Pier feels incredibly special. This is an important moment for me, and for a new generation of independent artists who are redefining what it means to be a modern-day artist”.
Glen Sutton, Director at Fulham Pier said: “There’s something special about summer at Fulham Pier – the long sunny days, the river, the way people spend time here. I’m excited to see Sophie’s installation running through the Pier as part of that experience, adding a playful cultural layer for people to enjoy.”
Following a previous commission by artist and designer Yinka Ilori, the installation is part of Fulham Pier’s rotating public art programme which frames contemporary art as something encountered naturally along the Thames.
Launching at the start of Fulham Pier’s wider culture‑led summer programme, the artwork sits alongside a season of unique, free and affordable events for adults and families alike, including summer markets, live music, funfair games, family raves, roller discos, DJ takeovers and open‑mic nights. Other cultural highlights include brand‑new interactive digital art installations indoors, as well as mudlarking exhibitions.
Those seeking a slower, seaside‑inspired summer experience can also take part in secret film screenings, family craft and jewellery workshops, sound healing and breathwork sessions, alongside a wellness summit and relaxed community mornings.
Brasserie Constance, curated by Michelin‑starred chef Adam Byatt, and Flo Bar offer elevated yet approachable dining and cocktail options overlooking the Thames, with standout river views to soak up during warm summer sunsets and evenings. Meanwhile, Riverside Market, London’s only riverside food hall, brings together a newly refreshed and dynamic line‑up of street food, serving a wide variety of international dishes, coffees and drinks that are designed to delight every palate.
Visitors can experience Sophie Tea’s public art installation at Fulham Pier from 1 June 2026, free and open to the public daily*.
