‘Primary Wave Music acquires Hipgnosis’ is an announcement that a few years ago would have almost-certainly involved music rights.
But no, this is the other Hipgnosis: the one that designed album artwork for the likes of Pink Floyd, Queen, Led Zeppelin and AC/DC.
Specifically, Primary Wave has acquired Hipgnosis co-foudner Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell’s interests in the company’s collection of artwork, as well as some famous objects and sculptures used for the photo-shoots.
What’s the plan to make money from this deal? Exhibitions.
“Primary Wave will continue to collaborate with Po to create global exhibitions of the Hipgnosis catalog in an effort to continue celebrating the legacy of this artwork for many years to come,” explained the company.
“For too long I had been approached to sell off bits and pieces of my collection which did not interest me, and I yearned for a company who understood the importance of the work in its entirety and the recognition as a serious art form,” added Powell.
“I was at an impasse having reached a respectable grade of exhibitions, but without the backup, the connections and the teamwork required to move on up I could expand no further.”
It’s a busy month for Primary Wave: the Hipgnosis announcement comes a few days after it inked a deal with The Who co-founder Pete Townshend, focusing on his name, image and likeness rights as well as future creative projects.
