How beehive painting is protecting colonies in Dunfermline

A team of 11 from Taylor Wimpey East Scotland joined Dunfermline-based beekeeping enterprise Kin Bees for a hive-painting session to support local honeybee colonies ahead of World Bee Day.

The session was part of an ongoing partnership between Taylor Wimpey and Kin Bees, now in its second year.

Karen Malt, project manager for Whitefields and sustainability champion for Taylor Wimpey East Scotland, said: “As work at our Whitefields neighbourhood continues to progress well and our first development Whitefield Gardens has launched for sale, we’re delighted to continue our partnership with Kin Bees.

“Taking part in the hive-painting session ahead of World Bee Day was a great way for our team to support this local business and learn more about the vital role bees play in our environment and how we can support local biodiversity.”

Painting hives in different colours helps bees identify their own home, reduces drifting between colonies, protects the hives from weathering and supports temperature regulation throughout the year.

The continued sponsorship enables Kin Bees to invest in essential equipment and expand its work to protect and nurture local bee populations.

Gael Wilkinson, head beekeeper and owner of Kin Bees, said: “We’re thrilled to have Taylor Wimpey East Scotland’s support for a second year.

“Their enthusiasm during the volunteering session was fantastic, and their sponsorship helps us continue our work to protect local bee populations.”

Taylor Wimpey says the partnership aligns with its wider environment strategy, which includes enhancing biodiversity at new developments.

Whitefield Gardens forms the first phase of the wider Whitefields, which Wimpey say will continue to grow into a vibrant, well-connected community in the years ahead.
