Project Row Houses Opens Call for “Southern Survey Biennial III”

Project Row Houses (PRH) in Houston has announced an open call for its Southern Survey Biennial III, an exhibition focused on artists in the southern U.S.

Contemporary visual artists living and working in the 13-state region comprising Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia — colloquially known as “The South” — are eligible to apply.

Artists selected for the exhibition, scheduled for October 2026 through February 2027, will each receive a $5,000 stipend to put toward their installations. One participating artist will receive a $25,000 prize selected by a guest juror, as yet unnamed.

The previous Southern Survey Biennial included two Texas artists, Violette Bule and Jamire Williams from Houston. New Orleans artist Nic[o] Brierre Aziz won the $25,000 prize, selected by juror Kimberli Gant, Curator of Modern & Contemporary Art at the Brooklyn Museum of Art.

The application asks for an introductory statement, a portfolio of one to five artworks, an optional budget for an installation in one of PRH’s 550-square-foot shotgun houses, and an answer to a key question: “Project Row Houses uplifts artists who demonstrate commitment and deference to the Southern region of the United States. How would you characterize your identity as a Southerner?”

Further details are available on the PRH Southern Survey Biennial III application page. Applications are due Sunday, May 31.
