Cara Kearns’ ‘Sunny in St.Petersburg (Mammoth County)’ is featured in Kelwood Contemporary Art’s exhibit, ‘Fiber Speaks.’
Kelwood Contemporary Art, 8202 Kelwood Ave., will open “Fiber Speaks,” an exhibition of work by members of the Contemporary Fiber Artists of Louisiana, on Nov. 1.
This dynamic show explores the expressive power of fiber arts — works that speak in many voices, from peaceful contemplation to bold protest, from reflections on the natural world to urgent political and social commentary.
The Contemporary Fiber Artists of Louisiana is dedicated to encouraging artistic growth among its members and fostering public awareness of contemporary fiber art. Its artists practice a wide range of disciplines, including art quilts, embroidery, weaving, surface design and embellishment, felting, rug hooking, doll making and such structural fiber arts as 3-D constructions, jewelry with fiber elements and beading.
Wendy Starn’s ‘Speak’ is featured in Kelwood Contemporary Art’s exhibit, ‘Fiber Speaks.’
The collaboration with Kelwood Contemporary Art offers an opportunity for the organization’s members to present work that pushes beyond traditional expectations. This venue provides a platform for pieces that may not easily find space in other settings due to their scale, experimental techniques or provocative subject matter.
Participating artists hail from across Louisiana — stretching from Alexandria and Avoyelles Parish through Baton Rouge to St. Tammany Parish. Featured artists are Beki Lambert, Rachel Crawford, Nancy Hinds, Margaret Ganier, Kathy Bourgeois, Katy Prescott, Yvonne Bayham, Melanie Borne, Mary C. Felder, Cara Kearns, Jessica Kemm, Lucy Landry, Donna LaFleur, Eleanor Lear, Phyllis Lear, Glen Parks, Wendy Starn, Holly Stone-Barker, and Vicki Thompson.
There will be an opening reception from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 1, and a closing reception from noon to 5 p.m. Dec. 14.
Lucy Landry’s ‘Ladies’ is featured in Kelwood Contemporary Art’s exhibit, ‘Fiber Speaks.’
Fiber Speaks will be on view through Dec. 14. Gallery hours are 1-5 p.m. Monday, Thursday and Friday. In addition, there will be special Saturday hours from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. throughout the run of the exhibition, featuring CFAL artists demonstrating their techniques and sharing their creative process in the gallery.
