A “LARGE-SCALE abstract geometric sculpture” of bicycle components will be situated near the first shelter at West Park, if Planning agrees.
Setting out his vision for the work, entitled ‘Cycle of Renewal’, “internationally recognised multidisciplinary artist” Corey Ceccarelli says in his application: “This is a transformative public art initiative centred on the creation of a monumental, interactive sculpture crafted entirely from reclaimed and discarded bicycle components: gears, pedals, spokes, chains, frames and levers.”
He added: “It reimagines the lifecycle of obsolete materials through the lens of sustainability, circularity, and creativity. At its core, this work encapsulates community collaboration, environmental responsibility, and the kinetic energy of both human and machine-powered movement.”
If approved, the “large-scale abstract geometric sculpture” will be around 2m high and be positioned at the eastern end of Victoria Avenue on its south side.
The application states: “Designed with flowing lines and swirling, toroidal or helix-inspired forms, it will appear to move even when static”.
Mr Ceccarelli tells Planning that he envisages a festival-like unveiling of the sculpture, to include live youth music performances and an ‘eco-fashion runway’, and school visits to the work.
