Sarah Long: ‘Intuition is a dirty word sometimes but I think that’s one of the most pleasing things about painting’

Sarah Long’s first art gallery visit was a school trip, aged 17. The exhibition Drawing in Motion at the Glucksman, featured artists including Alice Maher, William Kentridge, Tacita Dean and “it was just so exciting seeing the drawn line animated like that”. Long has “never really gotten over the impact that show had on me”.

She grew up in the countryside near Bandon, Co Cork, a landscape that during “these formative years meant that I naturally projected my view of the world onto it. I started to see hedgerows as these magical corridors of time, imagining them as holding stories in their form.”
