AKRON, Ohio – The Akron Art Museum’s newest exhibit, “She Said, She Said: Contemporary Women Artists,” is on display in the Karl and Bertl Arnstein Galleries and runs through Aug. 10.
The exhibit showcases the contributions women have made to contemporary art. The exhibit’s name is a play on the expression “he said, she said,” and suggests an inability to make progress on matters impacting women such as sexual violence, equal pay and political representation, according to the art museum.
“She Said, She Said: Contemporary Women Artists” seeks to emphasize the power of women’s voices. The exhibit features works by 37 artists from different generations, cultures and disciplines. Exhibited works range from the late 1960s to the present and include themes such as self-representation, sexuality, autonomy, abstraction, cultural roles and interventions into art history. The exhibit’s works span a range of mediums, including painting, photography, video, sculpture, textile and large-scale installation.
Some of the exhibited works contain content that may not be suitable for all viewers due to nudity, sexual themes and references to violence. Art museum staff members are available at the front desk and throughout galleries to answer questions.
First Thursday tour
On Thursday, April 3 from 11:30 a.m. to noon, the museum will lead a free 30-minute guided tour of the exhibit. The tour is accessible and features an American Sign Language interpreter. Registration is requested.
“Guest of Cindy Sherman” documentary
The museum will show the documentary “Guest of Cindy Sherman” on Thursday, April 17 from 7-8:30 p.m. in the auditorium. The 2008 documentary chronicles Sherman’s work and fame, while addressing themes present in the “She Said, She Said” exhibit about gender bias, fame and artist notoriety. The screening is free, but registration is requested.
Artists on Art
On Sunday, May 18 from 1-2 p.m., artists will lead a personalized tour of the exhibit that highlights their favorite works. The artists will also discuss their own artistic process and practice, according to the museum. The tour is free, but registration is requested.
Workshop: Creative Play with Liz Maugans
The museum will host a creative workshop for adults with Cleveland artist Liz Maugans on Thursday, May 22 from 6-8 p.m. The workshop will be inspired by the “She Said, She Said” exhibit and includes mark making, collage and mixed media materials. Tickets are $15 for members and $25 for non-members. Purchase tickets online.
Art museum hours are Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Admission is $12 for adults, $10 for adults ages 65 and older, $8 for students and free for youth ages 17 and younger. Admission is free on Thursdays.
