Scabal’s Vision Collection showcased at Surrealism Soiree.

On a crisp winter evening in the capital, the Satish Gujral–designed Belgian Embassy transformed into an immersive world where surrealist art and bespoke couture converged. The Surrealism Soiree, presented by TSB Overseas in collaboration with Scabal, unfolded as an evening that blurred boundaries between eras, disciplines, and interpretations of luxury. Hosted by His Excellency Didier Vanderhasselt, Ambassador of Belgium to India, alongside TSB Overseas Founder Sarbinder Singh Bindra, the night drew Delhi’s cultural powerhouses for a rare celebration of heritage, fantasy, and craftsmanship.

The event marked a milestone: the first-ever Indian exhibition of Salvador Dali’s original artworks commissioned by Scabal in 1971. The twelve surrealist paintings – Dali’s prophetic visions of the menswear of the future – were displayed alongside the Scabal fabrics they inspired, creating a vivid dialogue between imagination and materiality.

“In 1971, Scabal commissioned Salvador Dali to imagine the future of menswear through 12 visionary paintings. These iconic works have continued to inspire our design teams and remind us to stay forward-looking in both creativity and business. We’re thrilled that our new fabric collection, inspired by these images, has given us the opportunity to bring the paintings to India for the first time for this unique event,” said Gregor Thissen, Executive Chairman, Scabal Group.

The evening opened with a keynote by curator Lekha Poddar, followed by a panel led by Vijendra Bhardwaj of Esquire India. Voices including Aindrila Mitra, Priyadarshini Raje Scindia, Sana Rezwan, Tarun Khiwal, David Abraham, and Gregor Thissen examined surrealism’s influence across modern design, culture, and luxury craftsmanship.

A highlight was the runway presentation of Scabal’s Vision Collection, which was curated by Prasad Bidapa and brought alive by The Darzi Group, Diwan Saheb, Jade Blue, and P N Rao. The silhouettes nodded playfully to Dalí’s eccentricities, with models styled in subtle moustache motifs and impeccably tailored menswear crafted from twelve exquisite fabrics.

A surprise womenswear look by Dhruv Kapoor underscored the gender-fluid versatility of Scabal’s textiles.

Ambassadors, diplomats, designers, and fashion luminaries, including Suneet Varma, Anju Modi, Kevin Nigli, Reynu Tandon, and Rakesh Thakore, walked the Embassy lawns as live jazz by Agneya’s Quintet enriched the atmosphere.

Blending art, luxury, and cross-cultural exchange, The Surrealism Soiree signalled a new chapter in India’s engagement with global craftsmanship. It stood not merely as an event, but as a reminder that when imagination meets tailoring, the result is nothing short of transformative.
