Reignite XII announced for Yorkshire Museum and Art Gallery

Reignite XII: The Future of Culture marks the official launch of the York Culture Strategy.

The event takes place at the Yorkshire Museum and York Art Gallery on Thursday, January 22, 2026, from 6pm to 9pm, and sets out a shared vision for the city’s cultural development.

Cherie Federico, director of Aesthetica, said: “Reignite has always been about bringing people together to think ambitiously about the role of culture in shaping places and communities.

“Launching the York Culture Strategy at Reignite XII reflects a shared commitment to collaboration, inclusivity and long-term sustainability, ensuring culture continues to thrive at the heart of York.”

The strategy outlines priorities for the coming years, including community engagement, workforce support, cultural identity, and cross-sector partnerships.

The event gathers cultural organisations from York and beyond, including national figures from National Museums Liverpool and Manchester Museum.

Councillor Pete Kilbane, deputy leader of City of York Council and executive member for economy and culture, said: “Culture is central to York’s identity and future prosperity.

“The York Culture Strategy provides a clear framework for supporting creativity, strengthening our cultural economy and ensuring that culture is accessible to all.

“Reignite XII is an important moment to learn from regional partners and to build momentum around York’s ever-expanding cultural ambitions.”

A central part of the evening is a panel discussion titled The Future of Culture, featuring Laura Pye, director of National Museums Liverpool, and Esme Ward, director of Manchester Museum.

The discussion explores how major cultural organisations respond to changing audience expectations, financial challenges, and technological advancements.

It also highlights the ways in which culture can drive economic growth, support jobs, and expand skills pathways across the region.

Manchester Museum’s recent focus on community involvement, environmental responsibility, and inclusive storytelling has been widely recognised as a model for modern museums.

Panellists will share insights on sustainable exhibitions, digital innovation, and long-term audience development.

Rachel Bean, project manager at York BID, said: “Reignite XII is an opportunity to listen, connect and think collectively about what comes next.

“By bringing together local cultural voices with national leaders from across the North, we can share knowledge, learn from success and shape a cultural landscape that is vibrant, inclusive and resilient.”

The evening begins with presentations and the panel discussion from 6pm to 7.30pm, followed by networking, drinks, and a DJ at York Art Gallery until 9pm.

Attendees will also have exclusive access to the Aesthetica Art Prize and Future Tense exhibitions.

Reignite XII is delivered by Aesthetica, York BID, and York Museums Trust, with funding support from Mayor David Skaith and the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority.
