The Art Gallery of NSW (AGNSW) is proceeding with plans to axe 45 jobs to repair budget cutbacks following a NSW Treasury review.
The decision comes after five weeks of consultations and staff protests outside Parliament House (SMH).
Only six positions – believed to be mainly administrative roles – have been saved out of 51 jobs originally targeted under the controversial restructure.
The NSW government has defended the cuts by referring to a 2024 state Treasury review that found AGNSW’s revenue growth hadn’t kept up with a sharp increase in the costs associated with the 2022 opening of its Naala Badu building (AFR).
The gallery’s total funding was $72.4 million in the 2024-25 financial year but is set to fall to $66.6 million in 2025-26.
The new structure will be implemented in November.
